PAN

PAN or Permanent Account Number is a unique ten-digit alphanumeric identifier provided by the Income Tax Department. It's often known as a PAN card. 

Here's an example of a PAN: 

PAN Format: The first five digits are alphabetic, followed by four numeric digits, and ending with an alphabetic digit. ALWPG5809L 

The fourth character indicates the type of assessee.
