This change applies to returns on or after 1st August 2022. For returns up to 31st July 2022, the e-verification period remains 120 days. The Income Tax Department has also simplified the e-verification process, eliminating the need to log in to your income tax portal.
The Income Tax Department offers online and offline methods to verify your Income Tax Return.
- The online method, also known as e-verification, includes three steps-

Online
Process 1: E-Verifying with Aadhaar OTP
Step 1: Visit the e-filing site. Navigate to 'e-file' > 'Income Tax Returns' > 'e-verify return'.
Step 2: Choose 'I would like to e-verify using OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar'. This requires your mobile number to be connected with Aadhaar and your PAN-Aadhaar must be linked.
Step 3: Click "I agree" to confirm your Aadhaar Details and generate OTP.
Step 4: Submit the OTP number. You'll receive a verification success message.
You'll receive an acknowledgment which you can download and will also be sent to your email.
Process 2 : E-Verify Return with Digital Signature Certificate
DSC contains:
- Owner's name
- Owner's public key and expiration date
- Name of issuing authority
- Serial number
- Issuer's digital signature
Step 1: After filing the ITR, choose “Verify using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)”.
Step 2: On the next page, verify your identity by clicking on "Click here to download emsigner utility".
Step 3: Click on "I have downloaded and installed emsigner utility."
Step 4: On the next page, choose provider, certificate, enter provider password, and click “Sign.”
After successful sign-in, a transaction ID will be provided. It is crucial to save this for future reference. An email will also be sent containing the transaction ID.
